Baking biscuits with Miko Cat and Miss M!!

Miss M has been desperate to play with all her Xmas/birthday presents particularly the messy creative ones (e.g Moon Sand) that are really unsuitable around Mister B.  So when Mister B had a nap yesterday afternoon I agreed we could try out her new ‘Miko Cat Make and Bake Gingerbread Baking Set’.

199083811It came in a gorgeous solid cardboard case (which we’ll use to store little bits & pieces in Miss M’s bedroom).  Inside was a lovely apron, rolling pin, mixing spoon, 3 cutters and a recipe card for ginger biscuits.

So we got started with mummy measuring out the ingredients and Miss M sitting excitedly on her kitchen chair waiting to pour each item into her mixing bowl.  And the question I kept hearing was “When can I put my hands in mummy?”.  So upon adding the butter to the dried ingredients I let Miss M loose with her hands in the bowl to rub it all together in a bid to form a dough.

And I must say I was very impressed with Miss M’s efforts as within a few minutes she had created a fine powdery blend with not a buttery lump in site.  We added the egg and made a dough which we rolled out and had lots of fun cutting it into shapes.

When the biscuits were cooked and cooled I made a small amount of royal icing in a piping tube and let Miss M free to decorate as she pleased.

I thought the resulting biscuits were delightful and Miss M was very proud of her creations.  It was great to spend time baking with my daughter and I hope to make it a more regular activity once Mister B discovers a bit more independence and is able to entertain himself or even join in and have a go at some baking alongside his big sister.

Miss M’s 4th Birthday!! – Princess Castle Cake

So the amazing Miss M was 4 years old on New Year’s day.  We actually held her party on New Year’s Eve at a local hall with the main attraction being a pink princess bouncy castle incorporating a slide out of the side (at madam’s request).

As usual I made her birthday cake the night before with a vague idea in my head of the finished design.  At midnight when the icing wasn’t quite adhering to the cut chocolate sponge quite as I hoped I began to despair, but by 1am it started coming together.  At 2am I wondered quite what I had let myself in for as I stood in the kitchen cutting wafers into triangles and spraying them with edible silver spray and by 3am I wondered where my sanity had gone as I sat with a pair of tweezers picking up silver balls one by one in attempt to write Miss M’s name across the cake.

Finally at 3.30am a princess castle cake was complete and mummy could finally put head to pillow in a bid to get 3 hours sleep before Mister B woke up and the morning party preparations took place.

DSCF3720After a successful party with 16 excited, over energetic 3 & 4 year olds, I was finally able to relax for a few hours.  And determined not to be stuck in the kitchen all evening I had already pre booked a table at Prezzo (Miss M’s fave restaurant) for us plus family for a special birthday dinner.

The birthday girl took her seat at the centre of the table and after devouring her 3 courses from the children’s menu, Miss M proudly and in a very grown up fashion sipped her Bambinoccino (frothy milk sprinkled with milk chocolate flakes).

Quotes from Miss M

I’ve observed a number of funny/cute totally unexpected comments coming from Miss M recently so decided to write them down as she said them and pick the best ones to share with you. So here goes:

When putting Miss M to bed one night:
“Mummy, I’m really proud of you and I love you lots”
I thought this one was lovely and totally unexpected.

After spending all afternoon preparing the dinner and dishing it up I got:
“I don’t like cottage pie but I like nursery’s cottage pie, just not the one at home”
Hmm – what can I say??

On a walk to the park Miss M feels tired so we stop for a rest on a park bench:
“I’m all hot and bothered now mummy”
Where did she get this phrase from?

About her little brother Mister B:
“I love my baby brother – he’s my bestest friend in the world”
How cute – I thought this was so sweet.

And then one day after nursery she burst into song:
Five little elephants went out to play,
Upon a spider’s web one day,
They had such tremendous fun,
That they called for another elephant to come.
Six little elephants went out to play…..

And so you get the drift of the song – it was so lovely to hear as I’d never heard this song before but what made it particularly fascinating was the tone Miss M used throughout the song with the highs and lows of each word.  It was one of those moments you wish you could capture on video as it was so cute to listen to and just pure innocent charm from Miss M!!

There was an old woman who swallowed a fly… museum crafty fun!

We go to a wonderful under 5’s group at our local museum every week.  There is a different theme each week where we look at a display or some objects around the museum and then make a crafty item that links in with the theme.  It is a really interesting group that allows the children to experience something new along with some fun in making something (usually with glue/tissue paper/sequins/glitter etc) and then stories and songs at the end to calm them down and bring the session to an end.

Miss M loves attending and we have made some wonderful things over the last couple of years.

Last weeks theme was “There was an old lady who swallowed a fly…”

We were given basic printouts of the lady and all the animals she swallowed which we had to cut out and decorate.  We then added an extra layer to the front of the skirt to make a pocket to keep all the animals in.

So here we have our finished lady!!

DSCF3516Poor Mister B spent most of the hour stuck in his push chair or when I did let him out, he was caged in my arms!!  If I dared to let him go he sped across the floor on his knees grabbing a multitude of coloured tissue paper that he had his beady eye on and chewed it up.  Hopefully in a couple of months he will understand what he can and can’t eat and it will make things much easier.

And here’s the song for those that want to join in with us:

There was an old lady who swallowed a fly
I don’t know why she swallowed a fly – perhaps she’ll die!
There was an old lady who swallowed a spider,
That wriggled and wiggled and tiggled inside her;
She swallowed the spider to catch the fly;
I don’t know why she swallowed a fly – Perhaps she’ll die!
There was an old lady who swallowed a bird;
How absurd to swallow a bird.
She swallowed the bird to catch the spider,
She swallowed the spider to catch the fly;
I don’t know why she swallowed a fly – Perhaps she’ll die!
There was an old lady who swallowed a cat;
Fancy that  to swallow a cat!
She swallowed the cat to catch the bird,
She swallowed the bird to catch the spider,
She swallowed the spider to catch the fly;
I don’t know why  she swallowed a fly – Perhaps she’ll die!
There was an old lady that swallowed a dog;
What a hog, to swallow a dog;
She swallowed the dog to catch the cat,
She swallowed the cat to catch the bird,
She swallowed the bird to catch the spider,
She swallowed the spider to catch the fly;
I don’t know why she swallowed a fly – Perhaps she’ll die!
There was an old lady who swallowed a cow,
I don’t know how she swallowed a cow;
She swallowed the cow to catch the dog,
She swallowed the dog to catch the cat,
She swallowed the cat to catch the bird,
She swallowed the bird to catch the spider,
She swallowed the spider to catch the fly;
I don’t know why she swallowed a fly – Perhaps she’ll die!
There was an old lady who swallowed a horse…
She’s dead, of course!

I wonder what we make next week – let’s wait and see. xx

2 hours of child free mummy me time!! Woohoo – or so I thought!!

So finally came the day when my dear little boy had his 2 hours settling in session at nursery. Miss M had already gone to nursery at 8am and now I was taking Mister B, having prepared myself for 2 hours of childfree time – still chores to do unfortunately – but time without Miss M constantly demanding food and Mister B from grabbing everything that isn’t actually a toy and eating it!!

So walking home from the nursery up to my front door I dig into my pocket for the house keys – and out comes the car keys – arghhh!!!!

I have no phone or money on me having only popped round the corner. Next stop – the neighbour next door but one.  I try endlessly calling the husbands mobile to no avail – help!!  I eventually call his place of work who manage to locate him, only to find he was on a course and his mobile had been set on silent.

Being in possesion of the car key I drive up to get the key and promptly arrive home with 10 minutes to spare before it’s time to pick Mister B up.

Bang goes those peaceful 2 hours where I planned to be super efficient and make a big dent in my “to do list”.
