Horrid Henry’s Tricky Tricks – Book Review

Horrid Henry’s Tricky Tricks is a collection of ten Horrid Henry stories presented in a hard back book, with full colour illustrations on each page – perfect for any Horrid Henry fan.

Horrid HenryContaining the stories:

Horrid Henry Robs the Bank
Fluffy Struts Her Stuff
Horrid Henry Wakes the DeadMoody Margaret’s Sleepover
Horrid Henry’s Autobiography
Horrid Henry and the Nudie Foodie
Horrid Henry and the Mad Professor
Horrid Henry’s Horrid Weekend
Horrid Henry and the Abominable Snowman
Horrid Henry’s Grump Card

Miss M who is almost 7, loves Horrid Henry and I often find her reading Horrid Henry books at bedtime.  She couldn’t wait to get stuck into to this collection of stories and started with Horrid Henry Robs the Bank.  The story follows him playing the board game, Gotcha, with Perfect Peter and Moody Margaret who has won a number of times previously.  This time Horrid Henry is determined that he will be the winner and will go to any length to make sure that he does win.  His first idea was to be the banker, but Moody Margaret takes on that role so he has to resort to an alternative method of cheating… You’ll have to read it for yourself to find out what he did.

This a great set of stories for Horrid Henry fans, and would make a great gift.  There is plenty to read and with the colour illustrations on each page, it helps maintain interest and engagement with the story for children who are fairly new to reading independently.

Horrid Henry’s Wedding – Early Reader Book Review

Horrid Henry’s Wedding is a classic tale of naughty Henry getting up to his usual antics and mischief.  In this story by Francesca Simon, Henry’s family are invited to Prissy Polly and Pimply Paul’s wedding and Horrid Henry is a pageboy!

Horrid Henry wedding book orion early readerThe day doesn’t start well with it pouring of rain, then Horrid Henry trips in a muddy puddle which covers his pageboy outfit before losing the rings in the church.  It’s never ending with Horrid Henry as usual but his constant antics are what keep children entertained.  Miss M enjoyed reading this and was amazed at all the things Henry got up to.  The book is an Orion red Early Reader which is perfect for her current reading ability and the writing is interspersed with plenty of colour pictures which helps maintain her interest and motivation to carry on reading.

Horrid Henry wedding book orionWe enjoyed this book and have already read it several times.  I would definitely recommend the Orion Early Reader series for young readers, they never fail to disappoint, are of a high quality and always full of colour illustrations that help bring the stories to life.

Horrid Henry Early Reader – Book Review

Horrid Henry’s Sleepover by Orion books is part of their early reader series which I think is perfect for young readers to bridge the gap between large style picture books and paperbacks.

Horrid Henry sleepoverMy 6yr old daughter loves Horrid Henry, is always giggling at his antics on television so a Horrid Henry book is ideal for her.  She is a fairly competent reader for her age and is able to sit and read this herself although does require some assistance with certain words so it’s good to sit down with her and listen to her read aloud.

The story follows Horrid Henry going to a friends house for a sleepover.  Although he’s done it many times before, he’s always got up to his usual mischief and been sent home but things work out slightly differently on this occasion and he chooses to go home rather than being sent home.  You’ll have to read the story to find out what happens…

Horrid henryMiss M loved Horrid Henry’s Sleepover book as I predicted and it’s been beside her bed since we received it.  She find’s it hilarious with some of his antics and the pictures really break up the text in the early reader books which keep her entertained and maintain her interest in reading.

Orion Early Reader Books – Princesses and Horrid Henry

With Miss M’s love of reading, her ability to independently read is progressing well and the Early Reader books from Orion are ideal in making that step from large picture books to proper grown up books.  Miss M loves that they are broken down into small chapters (chapters make her feel very grown up) and the text is interspersed with pictures to help maintain interest and entertain.

princesses bookA Palace Full of Princesses is a delightful book for any little girl containing four classic princess fairytales.

  • Cinderella
  • Snow White
  • Sleeping Beauty
  • The Frog Prince

Each story is broken down into chapters making it easy to read but the storyline has kept to the traditional fairytales we all know and love just written in an update way for children to enjoy.

This early reader book is simple enough for 5 yr old Miss M to read although there are a good selection of new or longer words to challenge her and make her think or ask for assistance.  She loves the pictures to go with the story and it gives her confidence in what she is reading to ensure she understands the story properly.

palace of princesses orion booksI love this collection of princess stories, a perfect addition to any young girl’s bookshelf.  The book printed on top quality paper with a high glossy cover.  This would make a lovely present for any little girl this Christmas.

Horrid Henry royal riotHorrid Henry is one of Miss M’s favourite characters, she is mesmerised by his naughtiness and he always has her in fits of giggles when she watches the programme on television.  Now that she has started to read, Horrid Henry books are a great choice for her as it is a character she knows and loves, so she finds it easier to pick up the storyline.

Horrid Henry’s Royal Riot is a collection of four Horrid Henry books presented in a beautiful hard back book.

  • Horrid Henry’s Thank You Letter
  • Horrid Henry Meets the Queen
  • Moody Margaret’s School
  • Horrid Henry’s Sports Day

Each story is broken down into chapters with plenty of entertaining illustrations to keep your child occupied.  Miss M likes to look at the pictures before she reads each page which I think also helps her read the next part.  Miss M found this book a little trickier than the princesses book but only because it’s written with a lot of conversation between Henry and others, and she’s never quite sure where to pause for breath.  We found to start with I read one page and she read the next which kept her motivation up.

We started with Horrid Henry’s Thank You Letter which is about Horrid Henry not wanting to write his thank you letters after Christmas and the battle of his parents trying to get him to do them.  Eventually he did them and then found a way to make money out of writing them on behalf of his friends,  I’ll let you read the rest.

Horrid Henry royal riot pagesHorrid Henry’s Royal Riot is a lovely early reader book that boys and girls will love equally.  And with four stories under one cover this has to be a book that will last and children will read again and again.  Another great gift idea this Christmas for young readers out there.

Orion Children’s Early Reader books – Review

I’m really pleased with how Miss M’s reading has come along since she started school.  She’s doing excellently with her phonics and loves sitting to read by herself in bed.  So when Orion Books sent us some early reader books to try, I knew she would be pleased.

orion books shumbaThe first book we read was Shumba’s Big Adventure, a lovely story of a cute little lion cub who wanders away from home, ends up being captured and taken on an adventure with other animals before luckily escaping and finding his way back to his family.

The book is full of colour illustrations on every page and with just a couple of lines to read which ensures young children like Miss M don’t get bored.  Miss M did really well and could read a lot of the words although there were some words that challenged her, so I felt that this is the perfect level of book for her.

orion books henryThe next book we read was Horrid Henry’s Homework – as soon as Miss M saw the front cover she was very excited as she is a huge Horrid Henry fan and sits watching his DVD’s whenever she gets the chance.

Miss M found this book more challenging than Shumba’s Big Adventure, but in a way that is a good thing, as it gives her something to practice.  As the book really appeals to her she is determined to give it a go and we try a few pages at a time.

One thing Miss M loved about both of these books is the chapters!  It made her feel all grown up and she loved using her bookmark to keep her page.  I think both of these books make excellent early readers, I love the fact that every single page is illustrated and with just a few lines of writing, the child doesn’t get lost in a sea of words.  The books are of excellent quality with durable pages.  A thumbs up from us!

Horrid Henry DVD – Review and Giveaway

With Christmas looming, there is nothing better to get you in the festive mood than a Christmas themed DVD.  So when we were sent the latest Horrid Henry DVD from Abbey Home Media, Miss M couldn’t wait to watch it.

Horrid Henry and the Early Christmas Present is the latest in the series of Horrid Henry DVD’s to be released and will be available from 12th November 2012.

It contains six exciting episodes:

Horrid Henry and the Early Christmas Present
Horrid Henry and the Silly Siblings
Horrid Henry and the Tickly Treats Thief
Horrid Henry Alone At Home
Horrid Henry So not a girl
Horrid Henry Bogus babysitter

Miss M is a huge fan of Horrid Henry and it never fails to disappoint.  She thoroughly enjoys sitting down to view his naughty antics and I always catch her giggling to herself – she finds his naughty behaviour hilarious and with his lively personality he is constantly up to mischief to keep Miss M entertained throughout each episode.

Miss M’s favourite episode on this DVD is ‘Horrid Henry and the Early Christmas Present’ about the build up to Christmas and Horrid Henry’s naughtiness leaving him in jeopardy of receiving no presents on Xmas Day.  The contrast between Horrid Henry and his younger brother Perfect Peter is a great example for Miss M to take on board as to the consequences of bad behaviour!

This is a great DVD to keep young children entertained – they’ll love all the fun and antics that form the everyday part of Horrid Henry’s life and it is definitely a DVD that will be watched again and again.
