Barbie Malibu House – Review

Barbie Malibu House from Mattel has to be every little girls dream house to for their Barbie dolls to live in and it certainly brought a huge grin to Miss M’s face when she received this to review.

barbieThe Barbie Malibu House comes in a large box but only partially built so does require some self assembly to put it all together and additional stickers to finish the decor.  This will require an adult and took me a good half hour to get it all finished.  Personally I would pre build this if it was a gift so that the child receiving it could play with it immediately and no messing around on the morning of a birthday or Xmas.

barbie 1Once built the Barbie Malibu House consists of a fold out house which on one side is the front of the Malibu house with large opening double front doors and on the reverse is the inside of the house built on two levels with a spiral staircase to get between floors.  The staircase has a cyclindrical fish tank down the centre making it very stylish and a very clever mechanism that you stand a doll in, pull down a lever on the side of the house and the doll moves upstairs by herself!  You can also do the reverse to come down again.

barbie 2The house also folds around into square shape to close it up for easy storage and clips shut.  We do prefer to leave it open though against a wall so we can leave all the furniture set up and it’s always accessible to play with.

The house is split into six areas plus the staircase with upstairs having a tv lounge, bedroom and bathroom, and downstairs a kitchen, hallway and sitting area.  I have to say I was quite impressed with the amount of accessories and furniture that are included with this house, much more than I expected making it a complete toy ready to play with.  The only thing you need to add is a doll.  Everything you see in the pictures below comes as part of the Barbie Malibu House, the only thing we have added are the dolls!

barbie 3The modern sitting area upstairs includes a rather funky circular chair and a tv screen which if you wish you can simply slot a smartphone into it and play a video for Barbie and your child to watch!  My children were quite fascinated by this and we did watch some short Barbie clips on there but I wouldn’t leave my phone in their unsupervised.  This would be perfect though if you have an old phone that you no longer use and you weren’t worried what happened to it.

barbie 4The bathroom contains a toilet with lift up seat and a vanity unit sink area, the bedroom has a reversible bed that when lifted up converts to a wardrobe and shower.  The bed comes with two plastic pillows and a fabric duvet cover.  In the kitchen there is a full width kitchen unit containing an oven, hob, sink and fridge.  The oven and fridge open so that you can put things inside.

barbie 5Included in the house are a sofa, coffee table, bubble chair, taller table, 2 chairs, lamp, tablet, phone, toothbrushes, toothpaste, cutlery, various drink cups, plates, pizza, bowl of popcorn, vase of flowers and much more!!  Both tables have a pretty looking design on top as does the kitchen worktop.  It wasn’t until we began to play that I realised a rather ingenious design concept with them is that there are small indents that match the bottom of all the plates, cups, bottles, kettle etc which enables them to fit together so that you can’t knock anything off!  I was really impressed with this as I remember as a child spending much time trying to stand little items on a table for my dolls.  Here if you knock over a table all the items stay attached – perfect!

barbie 6The imaginative play potential with this Barbie house is fantastic.  Both of my children got stuck in straight away taking the dolls on adventures and inviting them over for tea.  They loved knocking on the large front door and letting the guest dolls in for a party.  What I like about the Barbie Malibu House is that it is quite wide, which easily allows more than one child to play at a time.

barbie 8Although the Barbie house is plastic, it does feel strong and durable, and the accessories are a softer plastic meaning they are unlikely to break.  I think this is an amazing house that will provide hours of fun and be a dream toy for most young girls.  With the special lift to get up the stairs, the double sided bed/wardrobe and all of the pretty accessories, there is so much to play with and do, which along with their imagination will give hours of playtime.

barbie 7I think the Barbie Malibu House would be the perfect toy for any young Barbie fan, it really does help to bring your dolls adventures to life and has lots of pretty features that make it a dream house for your dolls to live in.  I know this would have been at the top of my Christmas list many, many years ago!

Princess Alexa Barbie Doll – Review

Princess Alexa is a newly released Barbie doll along with a range of other Barbie toys, especially for the soon to be released film, Barbie and the Secret Door.  The film follows Princess Alexa, a shy princess but during the film she discovers a whole new fairy tale world and along with two magical friends helps to save the kingdom.  Other characters include a magical unicorn, mermaid and a fairy.

Barbie Alexa doll 4Miss M’s face lit up when she saw Princess Alexa, she thought the Barbie doll looked beautiful and when I told her about the new film, she can’t wait to go and see it.  Princess Alexa is a standard size Barbie with the additional feature that she sings!  The dress on her bodice is solid and this flashes coloured lights as she sings.  Her skirt is satin like and can be removed.  It has some large flexible flowers on it which really help it stand out and look pretty.

Barbie Alexa doll 2The highlight of this Barbie doll for Miss M is most definitely Princess Alexa’s songs.  To play the songs you simply press gently down on her arm and a song plays.  There are clips of two songs, both of which become quite addictive and we all know the words now after hearing them endlessly each day.  Even Miss M’s little brother Mister B joins in, singing along.

See Miss M and Princess Alexa’s songs here:

Miss M has loved playing with the Princess Alexa Barbie doll.  She is a beautiful doll with great added features in the songs and lights.  We are looking forward to the film Barbie and the Secret door which is released on DVD on 1st September 2014 and it’ll also be screened exclusively in Vue cinemas.

Barbie Jet and 2 Dolls Playset – Review

Argos have a large range of Barbie toys and accessories available and one that caught our eye is the Barbie Jet and 2 Dolls Playset.  Miss M is really enjoying playing with Barbie at the moment and has small accessories but longs for some sort of vehicle to move them around in so this seemed like the perfect toy.

Barbie jetThe Barbie Jet playset comes in a huge box and Miss M thought Christmas had come early when she saw it.  The box contains the jet and 2 Barbie figures, each in a pretty dress, necklace, shoes and carrying a handbag and suitcase each.

barbie jet 1The Barbie Jet requires a small amount of assembly from the box but this is simple to do and can be completed within 10-15 minutes.  The front wheel needs attaching and the tail end of the plane requires piecing together.  The side wings simply fold up vertically against the side of the plane when not in use to save space.  The chairs need to be attached to the base of the plane and a sheet of stickers need to be applied in the correct places.  I found the stickers simple to attach and they appear to be hard wearing and not likely to come off.

Barbie Jet 2 The main body of the Barbie jet folds open creating a playset.  Inside the jet are three chairs, all with seatbelts and fully reclining backs.  You can slide back the windows to reveal night images and there is overhead luggage storage.  At the back of the plane is an air hostess area containing a pull out trolley with three trays and rectangular meal plates that sit on the trays.  The trays fit over the chairs and clip in each side.  There is also a fridge, microwave, storage area and drinks machines.  Also included are three glasses and three sets of cutlery.

Barbie 5There is plenty of scope for imaginative play with the Barbie Jet playset.  Miss M was keen to get the Barbies packed up and fly them across the front room to their holiday destination.  Her younger brother Mister B was keen to join in making plane sounds and loved pushing the jet across the floor.

Miss M loves acting out the flight journey with the Barbies, packing the plane, serving them food before letting them recline their chairs and sleep before arriving at their destination.  The Barbie jet really does provide lots of entertainment value and adds a further dimension to playing with dolls rather than just dressing them up etc.

Barbie 3The Barbie Jet is larger than we first thought it would be, making it a prominent toy and one that has grabbed the attention of Miss M’s friends when they have visited.  The jet has a height of 32.5cm, length 84.5cm and width of 28cm (with wings folded up).  It is a great play piece that can either be played as a stand alone toy or easily fits in with other toys you may already have.

Barbie 4The adventures with Barbie are endless, I see this as a toy that will get plenty of play value and be used in many different scenarios.  Miss M loves setting things up carefully inside ready for a day of play.  She loves the jet and can’t wait to show her friends – being the size it is makes it ideal for a couple of children to play with it at the same time as they can easily reach inside and have a Barbie each to take on the flight.

This is a dream toy for Miss M to own to play with her Barbie dolls and I think any other young girl who loves her dolls would feel the same.  I think the Barbie Jet will be a much loved toy over the next few years.
