Real Construction from Jakks toys gives kids a fantastic insight into woodwork, but in a child friendly way using foam pieces to replicate the wood and plastic tools that won’t harm or cut you in any way. You can build anything you like, but there are a number of ideas included with more detailed instructions available online.
The kits contain everything you need to get started and we tried out both the starter set and the larger deluxe kit. We had a variety of tools, different screws/nails and a selection of foam shapes to use. We found it definitely worth using the instructions online so found it best to have a tablet in front of us with these on to guide us through.
Both of my children were very eager to try this out. They had seen in advertised on tv and always love to do things that make them feel grown up. Tools in hand they couldn’t wait to get started and granddad who loves his woodwork gave them a helping hand. I have to say though that to construct a design as per the instructions then children will almost certainly require an adults assistance. We found cutting the foam to maximise the amount of pieces you could cut out of each sheet was a little tricky and we had to make sure the children didn’t saw through sheets without pre planning what they were going to make and where they needed to cut. That said, they were so keen to create something that they were happy to listen to our guidelines and learn the best way to do things. Mister B wanted to make the speedboat that appeared with instructions in the Beano magazine, whilst Miss M was keen to make a sailing boat as one of her current favourite hobbies is sailing! The children loved making their various boats and the sets really do give them an insight into the basics of woodwork, the action of using the tools etc. There are endless possibilities with what you can make and the material itself is easy to work with, it’s just following set instructions that is tricky for younger ones. My children are both proud of what they have made and their boats take pride of place on their shelves in each of their bedrooms. Real Construction kits are a great chance to try out your potential woodworking skills and a child friendly craft that’s safe and fun!
