Storks comes to DVD

Storks is the fantastic new family film that’s been enjoyed in cinema’s recently and now been released on DVD to enjoy at home.  A family favourite this is great for adults and kids alike and is perfect for my 6 and 9 year olds to enjoy.  With fast paced easy to understand storylines and humourous scenes, we couldn’t wait to watch it for the first time as a family at home on the sofa.

Storks deliver babies… or at least they used to. Now they deliver packages for global internet giant Cornerstore.com. Junior, the company’s top delivery stork, is about to be promoted when he accidentally activates the Baby Making Machine, producing an adorable baby girl. Desperate to deliver this bundle of trouble before the boss gets wise, Junior and his friend Tulip race to make their first-ever baby drop – in a wild and revealing journey that could make more than one family whole and restore the storks’ true mission in the world.

The film quickly gets into the storyline and both my children quickly became engrossed in the film and were silent throughout – always a good sign!  They laughed and were kept entertained throughout.

After it finished I asked for their thoughts:

Mister B ” It was aweswome – can we watch it again?”

Miss M ” It was a brilliant film, I loved watching it”

I think that says it all, we as adults enjoyed watching it to and I think it makes a great film for us all to sit down and watch together.

If you haven’t seen it yet, plan your next weekend, get a copy of Storks on DVD and sit down with the family at watch it!

Eye Care with Biotrue and TheraPearl

Looking after my eyes is always something I’m careful about doing as I want to keep them in optimum condition but am prone to small infections such as styes several times a year.  I tend to wear eye make up at least six days a week, and it’s important to remove every last trace which can be hard when you have eyeliner, mascara and eyeshadow lodged around the lash line after a long day at work.

I’ve been trying out Biotrue, a preservative and detergent free eyelid wipe for daily use.  They are so gentle you can even use them on babies.  Each wipe is individually sealed for hygiene and to keep them sterile until use.  I found each wipe to be a generous size and plentifully moist to really cleanse the eye area and remove any last traces of dirt or make up that are left behind after my regular cleanse.  They leave your eye feeling fresh and clean and hopefully free of infection.  Also if you have an infection, be it a stye or something like conjunctivitus then these would be brilliant for using each morning and night to really help remove bacteria and clean up your eyelid in a gentle way.

Moving on to the TheraPearl eye mask, a new favourite of mine.  This reusable mask can be used hot or cold to relieve dry eyes, headaches, puffy eyes and more.  In this cold weather and with long days I’m incredibily tired in the evening after a day at work and I’ve found this to be a great way to relax before I go to bed.  When the kids are tucked up in bed I gently warm this up in the microwave, go and lie on my bed for 20 minutes with the mask on and totally relax in peace, which sets me up perfectly to drift off to sleep after releasing all the stresses of everyday life away.

It can also be used cold by keeping it in the freezer for a couple of hours which I have tried and it feels great to soothe sore, puffy, tired eyes but I think this will be better used in the Summer months when the weather is warmer and the cold mask will have maximum effect and feel like a total treat.

Spring has Sprung with Baker Ross Kids Crafts

After dull Winter days it’s nice to see the colours of Spring coming out in the garden and these craft kits from Baker Ross are perfect for kids to make and brighten up the inside of the house too!  From flowers to bugs, everything is bright and colourful and they are all so simple to make, that I find they have a wide appeal which both my 9 and 6 year olds love to get stuck into.

Without any hesitation, the children sat down and started making, colouring and sticking, they love these kits and it’s always a joy to see them engrossed in creating something we can enjoy to look at for the next few months.

I thought the Flower Suncatcher Decorations looked stunning strung across the kitchen windows catching the sun as it beams through.  Everyone that has visited has admired these and they really brighten up the view.

These Creative Colouring Flower Wreaths are so simple but look so effective, the children are working their way through colouring the whole set so I can hang them up somewhere.  They love dipping in and out of colouring these after school, at breakfast time etc.

How cute are these Bug Pom Pom Decorations?  A simple pom pom ball with a few sticky accessories that makes them come alive.  Making the pom pom is best suited to slightly older children so Mister B left these to Miss M to make.  She’s finished this little ladybird and is currently working on a bee.  I can’t wait to see the trio of finished bugs altogether, so cute!

One of the children’s favourite to make were these Peacock Crinkle Decorations,  so simple by just fanning some crepe paper for the feathers and then just sticking extra details on.  These look lovely on my kitchen wall and I think it’s great for the children to see and admire all the beautiful things they make everyday.

As you can see, Spring really has sprung inside my house with all these beautifully coloured crafts the children have made for me using the fun kits from Baker Ross.  These make a great anytime activity, which children enjoy and love seeing the finished results!

Wildlife Animals from Schleich

Schleich is always a popular brand for it’s durabiliy, quality and realistic looking creatures.  They have every type of animal you could be looking for from horses to dinosaurs, dragons to fun playsets. This week we have been looking at some of their wildlife animals in the Wildlife Starter Set.

With a zebra, lion, elephant and monkey as part of the collection I just knew my little boy would love these, particularly the monkey which has turned out to be his favourite.  He loves using these in all sorts of imaginative play, adding them in with his other toys, such as tractors, trucks and other figures for fun playing.

As you can see the animals are incredibly lifelike with lots of attention to detail.  Being realistic is great for kids because they can really see what the animals are like and talk about their features and learn to recognise different creatures.  The durability in Schleich figures is fabulous too and they will last without dulling in colour or legs breaking off.  They are without doubt the best quality figures we’ve played with.

If you are looking for animal figurines for little ones to play with then do check these out, you can’t go wrong with them and kids love them.  Here’s my little cheeky monkey with his favourite couple from the Wildlife Starter Set!

Available from Smyths Toys for £14.99.

My Fairy Garden from Interplay Toys

My Fairy Garden website is a delightful place that children can visit and get to know the fairies that live in the various Fairy Garden toys.  From Belle who comes with Fairy Garden to Lily who comes with Lilypad Gardens, they all have their own style and personality to go with their houses.

As you can see with Lilypad Gardens above, the set is lovely and child friendly, perfect for introducing children to gardening as they can grow something in the pot and play with the accessories each time they water the plant.  I just love the large saucer for this set that excess water will go into, there are little lily pads to float in the water and the drawbridge comes down for the fairy to walk across – how cute!

Each set is different and features it’s own fairy, you can find out about them all on the website as well as lots of other activities.  There are printable colouring sheets, spot the differences, ideas of things to make such as a twig ladder for the fairies to use.  There are also fun online games and quizzes.  Well worth trying out the Which Fairy are you quiz? to see which fairy you are most like.  It’s a simple multiple choice quiz which will give you the answer in minutes.

We also love the Flower Puzzle game, with 10 levels to get through.  You have to match different pairs of flowers up without crossing the path of another pair.  Both my children have sat down playing this with much fun trying to get further through the levels each time.  Why not give it a try – great for rainy day fun!

If your child loves fairies then make sure you check out the My Fairy Garden website for lots of fun, games and more!

Valentine’s Cupcakes topped with Devon Fudge

Valentine’s cupcakes topped with Double Chocolate Fudge from The Devon Fudge Company are the perfect indulgence for this time of year.  Enjoyed by couples, families and kids alike, it doesn’t matter who you make them for, you know they have a versatile appeal and if you have kids they can be part of your Valentine’s celebrations.

For simplicity I just used the basic sponge recipe my mum taught me many years ago when I first started baking, 2 ounces of butter, sugar and flour to each egg.  This is a simple one for kids to follow too and my two love mixing it up in a bowl for me with a wooden spoon (whereas it’d be straight in my stand mixer if I was doing it!).

So here goes to make a batch of 10 generously sized cupcakes:

  • 2 eggs
  • 4 oz caster sugar
  • 4 oz butter
  • 3 oz self raising flour
  • 1 oz cocoa powder

Simply cream the butter and sugar together before slowly adding the beaten eggs, then fold the flour in to make a rich, chocolately batter.

Bake for approx 20mins in a 180c oven (test with a sharp knife to ensure cooked through in centre)

Then for the frosting I used a simple buttercream:

  • 80g unsalted butter
  • 160g icing sugar
  • a tablespoon of milk
  • small blob of red gel food colouring

Simply beat all the ingredients together, pipe on top of each cake and then decorate as you like, obviously here we have added small chunks of the utterly delicious Double Chocolate Fudge from The Devon Fudge Company along with some small pink chocolate hearts to add to the feel of  upcoming Valentine’s Day.

The Devon Fudge tastes utterly delicious.  We did taste test it before adding it to the cakes and didn’t want to lose the flavour in the cakes so put the pieces on top.  As you bite down into the cake you really taste the fudge in the icing and it makes a delicous addition to what otherwise would be a standard chocolate cake.

For a quick a simple homemade treat this Valentine’s why not make a batch of these cupcakes and don’t forget to add some Devon Fudge for that extra special touch and flavour!

Vegan Beauty Must Haves for Spring

The world of cruelty free and vegan beauty has come a long way in the last few years and I’ve been lucky to try out some amazing products that will be perfect to fit into your Spring beauty regime.  From various brands, all of these products stand out for me with premium ingredients and high quality results that leave the products desireable to use and a pleasure to place on my skin.  Not only that, they look gorgeous on your dressing table too!

*************************************

jojoba and rosehip oil bottle

The Jojoba company 100% natural Jojoba and Rosehip Oil is a multipurpose oil, perfect for hair and skin.  The combination of ingredients is crucial to the benefits in that they help deliver the product to the deeper layers of your skin where it is really needed.  By massaging 2-3 drops onto clean damp skin the product is absorbed and nourishes where needed.  I loved using this before bed to really hydrate my skin as I’ve found with age I get dry around the chin area.  I love to let this work it’s magic overnight for a really healthy glow and thoroughly moisturised skin in the morning.  The bottle is stunning by the way – you won’t forget to put this on, because it’s a must have on your dressing table!

*************************************

Embryolisse is a French brand I’ve used before with their Radiant Eye Cooling Stick so I knew the quality would be good.  I don’t normally use a CC cream, just foundation so thought this would be interesting to try out.  The product has colour adapting technology and literally changes on your skin to suit your tone and colour.  With SPF 20 included and high coverage I absolutely love this product and was amazed at how well it applied to my face.  It covered all my blemishes, is moisturising, left my skin fresh, glowing and blurred away those fine lines – definitely a replacement for my current foundation.

*************************************

The Superfruit Complex 10 in 1 Multi-Benefit Hair Masque from Shea Moisture is a luxurious treat for your hair that leaves it ultra soft, shiny, nourished, strengthened and more.  I found this easy to use in the shower by applying then letting the water run down my back while the hair masque worked it’s magic before rinsing off.  As you put your fingers through to rinse, you can feel that your hair is so smooth and soft, it feels fabulous, like a real treat and worth doing once a week when you have a few minutes to prevent dry, ageing hair.

*************************************

No Bleeding Lips from Know Cosmetics is a secret lip liner, clear in colour that can be applied around the edge of lips before lipstick or gloss to prevent bleeding.  I found this super soft and easy to apply, leaving me with a well defined lip line and lipstick that looked well applied. Definitely a staple for the make up bag!

Meet the Zomlings Series 5

The latest range of pocket size toys from Magic Box Toys are Series 5 of the Zomlings.  This pocket money range of toys seem to have mass appeal especially my little boy who was excited to check out the new range.

The range comes in various size packets, ideal for pocket money to be spent on or a as a small treat.  We recevied a selection which once opened out gave us the selection of Zomlings shown below.  The series consists of not only characters but city towers (buildings) and big zom-mobiles (vehicles). Everything is bright and colourful and attractive to children to play with.

There is a also a big town guide map which is double sided, one side lists all the characters which my little boy loved matching his figures onto and picking out others he’d like to own.  The other side consists of a play map with places to house each of the buildings and vehicle stations.

Each building has a sign saying what it is that folds out.  The door also opens so that you can put Zomlings inside and the buildings cleverly stack upon each other to save space.

My little boy loved the play map, it encouraged lots of ideas and fun and he loved moving the Zomlings around in their vehicles across it.  The vehicles have a fold up roof and then you can fit the figures inside.  There are two notches on the base of each vehicle which a figure will sit on so that they are upright.

There are many other fun packs to buy in the Zomlings range, there is so much to collect, you can create a whole Zomlings world.  Why not check them out today – I’m sure your kids will love them as much as my little boy does!

Date Delivered – Date Night in a Box

Date nights can be easily missed the longer you’ve been together especially if you have children and don’t have a babysitter on hand.  So Date Delivered have come up with the perfect solution, a date night in a box delivered to your door monthly, quarterly or even as a one off!

The set up is simple and you can fill out your preferences on food, drink, activity likes and dislikes to help them tailor a box towards you and your partner.  We received a ‘Guess the Grape‘ box to try out and see what we thought.  The box came excellently packaged and presented, it really did feel special and as if plenty of thought had gone into it.  Our box consisted of three mini bottles of wine, each inside a cloth bag so that you couldn’t see what it was along with two packs of Soffle’s spring onion and Italian cheese Pitta Chips.  You also get a set of cards, one giving you wine tasting tips, some cards describing different grape flavours, a fact card about wine and some game instructions.

The box definitely made us sit down together in the evening, rather than doing our own thing and on pouring the first glass of wine we were laughing as we tried to pick flavours out of the wine (as much as we like drinking wine, trying to guess what grapes it is made from is a whole different ball game!).  The cards helped with ideas and it was funny listening to the flavours each other thought was in the wine.  Alongside this we had the Soffle’s Pitta Chips which all I can say were utterly divine.  They just melted in the mouth, had a delicate flavour and were the perfect accompaniment to a glass of wine – I’d definitely purchase these again if I saw them for sale somewhere.  We enjoyed each small bottle of wine before moving onto the next one, making the game last throughout the evening and keeping the conversation going.

So what did we think of the box?

We like the concept of the box and definitely thought that it made us spend time together and have a laugh.  Some of the wine facts made us giggle especially knowing we actually get through rather an astonishing amount of grapes throughout the year!  Having the little grape guessing game to play rather than just drinking the wine encouraged conversation rather than doing our own thing on an iPad etc.  The snack was also the perfect accompaniment and the boxed package came beautifully presented.

At £33.95 a box, I do think this is quite high for what’s included, although having the whole package boxed up and delivered to your door is the bonus and means you don’t have to plan anything yourself.  Also the card prompts included turn the night from just eating and drinking to a fun night full of conversation and laughs.

If you struggle to fit in date nights then maybe a box from Date Delivered would change that and make you spend more time with your other half, whether it’s while the kids are still up or once they’ve gone to bed.  It certainly makes you spend quality time with each other that can often be missed in a relationship!
