Goodbye Grandad Fred – You’ll be greatly missed!!

Things have been a bit quiet on here lately – we’re still here – just been through some difficult family times with my Grandad Fred having passed away at the ripe old age of 85.

Last week we made the 250 mile trip back to Kent where I grew up, back to my parents house to attend the funeral.  One of the hardest conversations I’ve ever had to have with 4 year old Miss M to date, was explaining what had happened and give her an overview of the funeral itself to ensure she had an idea what was due to happen on the day and to avoid any awkward questions during the service itself.

She seems to understand that people and things can die as when I told her the funeral was our way to say goodbye to Great Grandad Fred, she asked “How do we say goodbye to someone that has died?”.

After a very sad but lovely service it was off to the wake where I met up with lots of family members, many whom I had not seen for over 10 years.  With my Nan and Grandad having 5 children, 12 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren there was a lot of catching up to do, a lot of photo opportunites to be had and overall a successful afternoon had by all.

It was also a great opportunity to catch up with my brother and his family and watch the three little cousins running around having fun together.  Miss M being the oldest took charge and with Miss L just learning to talk it was really interesting watching them communicate together.

Even mummy got a small break from childcare when Grandad (my dad) took them to the park:

Roll on our summer holiday at the end of May when we’ll meet up again for more fun and frollicks, this time by the sea!!

Princess Personalised Colouring Book – Review

Find me a gift.com are an online retailer selling a huge variety of gifts – something for everyone in fact, which they break down into various categories to help you find the ideal gift for the person/event that you are purchasing for.  When we were asked to review an item from the children’s gifts, I chose the Princess Personalised Colouring Book which looked different, exciting and girly.

One of Miss M’s favourite activities at the moment is colouring.  She’s always bringing coloured pictures home from nursery and loves finding paper or printed pictures which she can colour in, so I knew she would be excited to try the princess colouring book from find me a gift.com.

When we received the personalised colouring book I knew it would have Miss M’s name across the front but what was really special was that the name you choose is actually printed on each of the colouring pages inside.  I think this is a really unique personal touch especially for children as they love to see their name on things.

The pictures in the Princess Personalised Colouring book are clear, bold designs with lots of colouring space, perfect for younger children.  And what I really loved was how girly the pictures are – lots of princesses, castles, carriages, stars and hearts.  So hard to find in normal colouring books which are tend to be generic.

The novelty of having the childs name on the pages is excellent and the way the name is displayed in the pictures is varied from being written in little stars, large cloud shaped letters or simply along the turret of a castle. We had fun on first opening the book, trying to look for Miss M’s name on each page – she was so excited to see her name – it definitely added a “Wow” factor to the colouring book.

This is a lovely sized colouring book with a good selection of girly pictures to colour in.  They are plenty of hours of entertainment to be had from this and with it’s unique personalised aspect would make an excellent gift, that any young girl would be delighted to receive.

We thoroughly enjoyed this colouring book and would definitely recommend it.  It is available from find me a gift.com currently priced at £7.99.

Dinosaur Race by Orchard Toys – Review

We were asked to review Dinosaur Race by Orchard Toys for izziwizzikids.co.uk.

With Miss M being quite young we have only just started playing board games but when I was offered the opportunity to try out the new Dinosaur Race game from Orchard Toys for ages 3+, I knew she would love it.  She is an avid dinosaur fan having watched the Jurassic Park films over and over again and has a number of dinosaur books on her bookshelf.

An exciting aspect of this game that jumped out at me was the race track and medal podium – with the 2012 London Olympics this year, what a fabulous way of introducing children to sport and helping them to engage with the largest event to be held in the country this summer.

Having already experienced a number of Orchard Toys games, I knew the quality of the pieces would be made to their usual high standard especially considering they are made of 75% recycled cardboard.  The pictures on both the box and the game are highly colourful, bright and eye catching – perfect for the suggested 3 to 10 years age range of this game.

Miss M couldn’t wait to get the pieces out of the box when she saw it and was very excited with the various contents.  The first little novelty was that the game board was like a mini jigsaw and mummy was ordered not to touch it while Miss M carefully put the pieces together.  I liked the fact that the dinosaur playing pieces had little plastic stands to create a three dimensional effect to the game.  And the ultimate finishing touch has to be the medal podium complete with medals enabling you to hold a medal ceremony at the end of each race – London Olympics 2012 here we come!!!

We played the game with the maximum 4 players and this definitely produced a fun, exciting atmosphere that created tension and competitiveness as the dinosaurs approached the finish line.

We all had great fun playing this game and definitely felt it was different and unique to other games we had seen before.  It retails at £11.75 which I feel is a reasonable price for the game and is available to purchase from Orchard Toys.
